Design Philosophy

Buell® motorcycles are born from the belief that every innovation must be focused on doing what’s right for the rider. This philosophy has led to the creation of the Trilogy of Tech™ system. It’s our road map. Three design principles that guide our every move: Mass Centralisation, Low Unsprung Weight and Chassis Rigidity. In fact, there isn’t a single component that isn’t evaluated over and over again with these principles in mind, ensuring the best handling motorcycle possible. Tying them all together is another fundamental practice known as Buell Multifunctional Design. It’s the idea that one part can be designed to serve more than one purpose to further improve the riding experience. Our unique approach to design is what sets Buell motorcycles apart from all the rest. One ride, and you’ll know exactly what we mean.

Buell Trilogy of Tech
MASS CENTRALISATION

We are relentless in our desire to not only move as much of the bike’s mass as close to its centre of gravity as possible, but also to optimise the location of the cg. This minimises its rotational inertia in its pitch, roll and yaw axes, making it feel light and nimble, allowing a rider to more easily flick in and out of corners.

LOW UNSPRUNG WEIGHT

Reducing the mass of all the components located beneath the springs is a big part of what makes a Buell® inspire so much confidence. The lighter these parts are, the better the suspension is able to respond to road inputs. The tyres maintain better traction, which results in more feedback and greater control.

CHASSIS RIGIDITY

During aggressive riding, motorcycles are subjected to severe lateral loads that can make a chassis flex. The wheels start moving out of alignment with each other, resulting in sloppy and unpredictable handling. Rest assured, that won’t happen on a Buell. The torsional rigidity of our chassis design is unparalleled. When you choose a line, your Buell remains stable and precise without any surprises.

Buell Multifunctional Design Engineering components that are designed to do more than one job results in a motorcycle consisting of fewer parts. Fewer parts means less weight, which of course means more nimble handling. But it also means less complexity, which translates into fewer problems in the future. Buell® Multifunctional Design provides riders with a better overall package, both on the road today and down the road for years to come.
